先週 飲みに行った方はお疲れ様でした。 次回は湖西市在住 カナダ人 Mr. Q 氏が参加します。 Ms Takayamaから 次回お題です。 お時間のある方は お読み下さい。 Gov. should introduce "Garden project" in Japan. The mission of The Garden Project is a non-profit program of the San Francisco Sheriff's Department for men and women released from the San Francisco County Jail. That is to provide structure and support to former prisoners through on the job training in gardening and tree care, counseling, and assistance in continuing education. "People think that once criminals are locked up, they are gone forever, but every day in California over 40,000 prisoners are released into free society. People don't understand that...One of the biggest failures of our justice system is that we put people in jail, but from jail we don't turn people out any better. We generally turn out people who are worse, and we're sending them back into your community. Former prisoners face a difficult period upon release. Most are unemployed, homeless, and still needing to address the issues that contributed to their participation in criminal activity, such as drug addiction, lack of education, job or life skills. These factors contribute to the fact that nationally, more than half of former prisoners will eventually return to jail within a matter of months. The Garden Project began out of the recognition that helping prisoners make this transition successfully can prevent them from returning to jail. While receiving job training, former prisoners could also give back to the community by working on projects that benefit the people and environment of low income communities. The Garden Project is proven alternative. Since The Garden Project began in 1992, more than 3,500 former offenders have gone through the program. 75% of Garden Project Apprentices do not return to jail.
