Hundreds of candidates taking nationwide university entrance exams over the weekend were forced to repeat parts of an English comprehension test due to glitches with hand-held IC players used to administer the test, exam organizers said.
Introduced this year, the listening comprehension test was held Saturday afternoon as part of the annual two-day exam used by national and public universities as well as many private institutions to screen applicants for the upcoming school year. Tests for Japanese and foreign languages, civics, history and geography were held Saturday, while those for science and math were conducted Sunday. More than 500,000 sat the exam. Officials of the National Center for University Entrance Examinations, which oversees the unified exam, said Sunday that 453 people across the country repeated the listening test Saturday due to problems with the players. The officials said the number was far greater than they had anticipated. A total of 492,596 people took the 30-minute test, in which examinees were each handed earphones and an IC player containing prerecorded material and questions. The recording cannot be replayed or stopped once it has started. The candidates were instructed to listen to a sample to ensure the device was properly functioning before being provided with an explanation of the test procedures. They were told to raise their hand should they experience any problem with the players during testing. Those who did, were attended by supervisors who immediately confirmed how far through the examinee was. An 18-year-old senior high school student in Takgajo, Miyagi Prefecture, who took the test at a venue on a Tohoku University campus in Sendai, said she heard a strange buzzing noise during Question 9 that did not disappear when she tried to adjust the volume. She later retook the test from Question 9 through Question 25 with a number of others who experienced similar problems. A 28-year-old man from Soka, Saitama Prefecture, who took the test at the University of Tokyo campus in Tokyo's Hongo, said he was bothered by the poor audio quality, although he did not report it as a problem.(IHT/Asahi: January 23,2006)
