I have recently enjoyed a 10 day’s early winter vacation to Canada. English writing has always been a tough work to me, but I would like to take this opportunity to challenge myself to write a short note of this journey. (1) Ph.D. On the flight to Toronto, Ontario, a Japanese woman in her early thirties happened to sit next to me. I asked her if she was a student, as she shouldered a rucksack with the famous Monteral - based Mcgill University’s name on the back. She replied she was not a student in a polite way speaking. Our joyful conversation in Japanese started from this tiny peg. She told me that her life in Canada began in Montreal some 10 years ago as a student at Mcgill University, and there met and then married a Mexican youth majoring in mining, which obtained Ph.D. degree later. They had recently moved to a rural area of Toronto where he got a full time job at a natural resource research company thanks to his Ph.D. title. Her present concern seemed to be buying a house instead of renting. She asked me whether I had some knowledge about how to acquire real estate in Canada. She also questioned how the money could be remitted from Japan to Canada if her mother living in Japan kindly offered financial assistance to help her get a house and what should be considered in buying real estate. She said that they had no friends they considered to be able help them with this matter. As I have once experienced those matters in business and personally, I gave her some advice, which seemed practical and fitting to her as far as I knew. At the airport her husband namely Mr. Ph.D. was waiting for her to arrive. They kindly drove me to the subway station nearest to my destination. Seeing his business card with a pair of glasses later, the word Ph.D. was proudly shown after his name. This was my first time to see Ph.D. word actually on the card. I had known that Ph.D. was the abbreviation of Doctor of Philosophy. But I wondered what relation there was between Philosophy (or philosophers represented by Kant or Socrates) and his major Mining (gold or oil). Why could he get the title Ph.D.? The question remained in my mind for a while. Then I looked up the word in some dictionaries. Sharp’s electric dictionary explains Ph.D. as follows: (a university degree of a very high level that is given to somebody who has done research in a particular subject) According to Oxford dictionary, philosophy has several meanings. One definition is (the study of nature and meaning of the universe and of human life). I could come to conclude that philosophy of Ph.D. meant the wide definition of Oxford rather than the philosophy represented by Kant or Socrates. So, philosophy of Ph.D. can include various kinds of studies ranging from Kant to her husband’s mining. But regarding medical science, Ph.D. is replaced by MD(medical doctor). The morning of the day I left Canada, I phoned to her to say sayo-nara. (2) Larry King and Bush The tape speed usually used at Wednesday Elmo class where I belong has been always too fast for me. The tape content consists mainly of CNN TV programs like “Cross Fire”. In Toronto I turned on the TV to watch CNN to see how I could follow the live broadcast. The Larry King show was on. The host was the famous Larry King with silver hair and that night’s guest was Mr. Kyle Scott. The pronunciation speed of both men proved to be far beyond my hearing ability within the five seconds from watching the show. With the help of the pictures and letters, all I understood was that he was born with no elbows and knees, but he was now an active wrestler (scenes of training and matches were viewed), male model, and motivational speaker, enjoying his life with parents and girlfriend. He may be a big American version of Ototake-kun in Japan. The next morning I opened the thick pages of popular Toronto newspaper “The Toronto Star”. Regarding President Bush, I found there was a signature article by a Canadian female journalist referring to his recent two day’svisit to Canada. The Toronto Star was regarded easier to read than Canada’s national paper “The Globe and Mail.” But I still felt it was very difficult to catch the meaning of her article without the help of a dictionary. Her article was saying that U.S. news people reported Bush’s visit to Canada with every negative connotation they could think of to describe Canada and its relationship with U.S. To prove the evidence of cold reports from the US, she quoted some current affairs programs including our familiar CNN Crossfire. In the program the host Tucker Carlson saying “Without the U.S., Canada is essentially Honduras: colder and lot less interesting ” and the co-host Paul Begala also mocked Canada, describing it as “limpid, flaccid ””third-rate, ”and “a made-in-Taiwan version of the United States.” Now that Canada has not sent its troops to Iraq despite the US pressure, the political relationship has not been warm. She remarked that the unfavorable reports from the US media would earn frosty reception from Canada. Any way it was interesting for me to come across the name of the fast speaking CNN Crossfire program in this journey. elmo_hamamatsu@ybb.ne.jp スペイン語を学びたい方!! SESAME&ELMO (大塚・服部・新村) TEL 053-457-5011 E‐mail elmo_hamamatsu@ybb.ne.jp home page http://www3.to/elmo‐h
