Antarctic whalers hold 2 activists
The Yomiuri Shimbun The country's research whaling fleet in the Antarctic Ocean took two members of the U.S. activist environmental group Sea Shepherd Conservation Society into custody after they boarded one of the fleet's vessels to block its activities, the Institute of Cetacean Research announced Wednesday. The Fisheries Agency said it began contacting Sea Shepherd to arrange a handover of the two detained activists to the group early Wednesday because the whaling industry group confirmed the two had not intended to harm the fleet's crew members. However, the agency said it had not received any response from Sea Shepherd despite attempts to contact the organization via telephone and e-mail. According to the agency and others, the fleet comprising six vessels was under way when they were attacked by Sea Shepherd activists. The activists used a large inflatable boat to approach the whaling vessel Yushin Maru No. 2, which was involved in catching minke and other species, and attempted to tie a rope around the Yushin Maru's propeller and throw a bottle of smelly fluid on deck. Two of the activists then climbed aboard the Yushin Maru at about 4 p.m. Tuesday Japan time and handed the crew members a letter of protest. According to the agency, the two did not resist when they were detained. According to Sea Shepherd's Web site, the pair are a 28-year-old Australian and a 35-year-old Briton. The group says its members boarded the Yushin Maru to tell its crew members that the vessel was violating an international law to conserve whales. No crew members of Yushin Maru were injured in the incident. === Japan continues whaling Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura said at a press conference Wednesday morning that the government would never accept the latest order handed down by the Australian Federal Court that the Japanese fleet stop whaling in the Antarctic Ocean. "No country will accept this order, issued under the incorrect premise that a part of the Antarctic Continent is under Australian control," Machimura said. "[The order] won't affect legal activities based on the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling on high seas at all." He indicated the fleet would continue its whaling activities.
