Paris and the Netherlands I have fully enjoyed my first trip to the Netherlands and Paris for twelve days in this summer. This trip planning started almost a year ago from someone’s hint so that it might be memorial as 15th. Anniversary of our walking club in Kakegawa. My first work was to choose one place from big 14 walking events overseas where our members would go in a group next year. Opening a world map on the desk, asking for advices from persons once experienced overseas walking, checking air fares, net-surfing homepages, a two months-long research led to the conclusion that Holland would be the best in terms of popularity, history and traffic. It was additionally another reason for me not to have had been there before. To take this opportunity、I would like to write three little hardships or happenings I faced. 1. Locked and no person After 1.5 hours train and 10 min. taxi ride from Amsterdam airport, our party of 21 people finally arrived in the evening at a village sports hall which was scheduled as our hotel during our stay in the Netherlands. But the door was locked with no lights and no person inside. I was afraid of a big mistake. At the time someone shouted “ There is a word of Kakegawa on the paper hanging on the front door”. On the paper, there were a phone number of the supervisor for the hall to contact . I was relieved. A cheerful guy appeared in ten minutes. 2. Where is a bus stop to the rail-station? Consulting a map and losing our way, we walked for more than one hour toward a big football stadium to see the opening ceremony of Holland Four Days Marches. The ceremony itself was fantastic with dozens of parachutists descending from the evening sky, but it seemed very difficult for our tired, hungry people to walk back to the station again. As a tour guide, it became really necessary to make some traffic arrangement. Bus hiring was best, but it was not easy to fix the meeting place of bus and us by phone at an unfamiliar town even with my English ability. The next best was to look after public buses. After 10min.’s fast walking, I found the only bus stop around the stadium. There was still 30min. by next and last bus’ coming. I rushed back to our members to take them back there. 3. Where are the office selling rail-tickets to our destination ? After Dutch walking, nine people of 21 still remained and left Amsterdam for our long-longing Paris by the first class of a comfortable international train with a top speed of 300 Km/ h. We got to crowded Paris North station on time. The station that used to be scenes of many pictures and has seen happiness and sorrows of Parisians!! But I was not allowed to enjoy such a sentimental feeling because I had a mission of buying local train tickets to the station nearest to the hotel that day’s night. Tickets purchasing is not easy, especially to a stranger in a strange land. It needed three check points ( Where is the tickets office for our line? Which is more economical for our 9 people, group tickets or each single? Where is the platform for our destination?). I asked and repeated many times S’il vous plait (excuse me in English). At big stations there are all ticket offices which are respectively specialized in certain routes. There were less signs/wordings guiding tourists there. But French people questioned were all patient and generous. Merci Monsieur and Madame!! Both of the Netherlands and Paris have given us very unforgettable memories of friendship, beauty and art. I wish to visit both again! Ghana-Location, Climate and Its People 「ガーナ ― 国とその人々」 留学生として来日し物理学博士号を取得、現在、静岡大学イノベーション共同研究センターに勤務するガーナ出身の半導体研究者が、アフリカの中の母国と多民族から成るその人々について語ります 料金 会費 6,000円(5回分)ビジター料金一回2,000円 連絡 大石(053)435-8270 牧野(053)434-2281 主催 LAFA (Learning About Foreign Affairs) ☆ お知らせ ☆ ・ ESS・エルモ会場・お休みのお知らせ J1 9/20 楽器博物館403 10/11 静大(予定) C.C ,EFC 9/23 お休み J2 10/22 和室 ESS 10/23 和室 ※お間違えのないよう、ご確認下さい。 SESAME&ELMO (大塚・新村) TEL 053-457-5011 E‐mail elmo_hamamatsu@ybb.ne.jp Home page http://www3.to/elmo‐h
