Travelers carrying check-in luggage line up at Narita Airport on Saturday, effectively the first day of the winter holiday season. About 45,000 people were to depart from the airport Saturday. Thanks to the strong yen and the weak won, South Korea has become one of the most popular tourist destinations this winter, whereas the number of visitors from South Korea to Japan has fallen sharply. Between Dec. 19 and Jan. 5, arrivals and departures at Narita Airport are expected to number 1.25 million--a decline of about 10 percent from last year due to the weakened economy.

Barbara Walters(*) of 20/20 (USA) did a story on gender roles in Kabul several years before the Afghan conflic

She noted that women customarily walked about 5 paces behind their husbands.

She returned to Kabul recently and observed that women still walk behind their husbands, but now seem to walk even further back and are happy with the old custom.

Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and asked, "Why do you now seem happy with the old custom that you used to try and change?"

"Land mines," said the woman with a grin.

Two of the World's best known are pooling their money in a bid to get the world off cigarettes.


A global program to reduce tobacco use in low- and middle-income countries was launched in 2006 with funds from Bloomberg Philanthropies. A competitively awarded grants program is an important part of the Program. The grants program supports projects to develop and deliver high-impact tobacco control interventions.

松浦、２戦３ゴールで救った！磐田がＪ１残留決める

Ｊ１・Ｊ２入れ替え戦（ホームアンドアウェー方式）第２戦は１３日、ヤマハスタジアムで行われ、アウェーの第１戦を１－１としていたＪ１磐田がＪ２仙台を２－１で破り、対戦成績１勝１分（２戦合計スコア３－２）でＪ１残留を決めた。

　磐田は前半４１分、１０日の第１戦（ユアテックスタジアム仙台）アウェーで貴重な同点ゴールを決めたＭＦ松浦拓弥が先制ゴール。後半２５分にはクリアボールからチャンスを得ると、またも松浦がＤＦを冷静にかわして追加点を挙げた。仙台はロスタイムにＭＦ梁勇基が直接フリーキックを決めたものの反撃遅く、あと１点を取ることはできなかった。

　磐田は今季クラブ史上最低の１６位に終わったが、なんとかＪ１に踏み止まった。対する仙台は５季ぶりのＪ１昇格を狙ったが、磐田・松浦の前に夢を打ち砕かれた。

　Ｊ１・Ｊ２入れ替え戦は、来季１８クラブに増えるＪ２上位３チームがＪ１の下位３チームに替わって自動昇格することになるため、来季からは行われない。
